Whether
you're lighting scented candles or more potent mood
enhancers, Float , the debut album from Lotus , might
just be the chill out disc you're seeking. Taking a
break from the Chicago darkwave quintet My Scarlet Life,
Christy Cameron Smith and Paul Infinity weave lush ambient
soundscapes, drifting from relaxing new age cuts to
ethereal trip-hop territory with songs like "Not
Far Away" and "I Know You." A kind of
sameness starts to creep over the album by the halfway
point, but as far as mood music goes, that's probably
the point.

Lotus
are a bit of a new band even if both members (Christy
Cameron Smith and Paul Infiniti) were members of the
Chicago-band My Scarlet Life who released 4 albums so
far! Paul is already for more than a decade a musician
and therefore Lotus sounds as a product from a band
with a very well formed sound. I don't know if it makes
any sense to speak of ethereal popmusic but that's what
they are basically like....an amazing sound that
floats between intelligent popmusic à la Madonna and the latest ambientdancemusic that was typical for
The Cocteau Twins. The strongness of this band comes
from Christy who has an amazing darkwave-voice while
the music itself is a sort of Locust/Scanner type of
thing. At times breathtaking and more than once a bit
like This Mortal Coil seen through alternative electronic
eyes!!!

Float
is a magical disc of plastic, that doesnt need
any images, any perfumes, any tastes, any sensations
to carry you away in a strange universe of harmony. The most pleasant feelings are simply created by
the strange fusion between the captivating, tearful
and so beautiful voice of Christy (My Scarlet Life)
and the bewitching blend of trip-hop "Not Far Away",
lounge; "Cool Breeze", ambient and sensual
music of Paul Infiniti (My Scarlet Life). This release
proves that it's still possible to make extraordinary
discoveries in the Internet (they were on the famous
mp3.com before publishing this cd on a professional
format) among the clumsy records, artificial bands,
and mediocre productions that benefit from a gigantic
major publicity. Lotus simply refine their songs with
an endless serenity. So just open your ears to discover
all the hugeness of their talent on this very intelligent
and well done first album! No hesitation!

This
album couldn't be more appropriately entitled. The songs
found on
"Float" softly flow through downtempo rhythms
and are enlightened by strong
melodies arising from acoustic, electric and electronic
instrumentations
and arrangements all lead by the sensual and yet powerful
voice of Christy
Cameron Smith.
